SoLS was established in January 2020 through the merger of the departments of Biology, Botany, and Microbiology and is housed within the College of Natural Sciences.  SoLS hosts the largest academic program on the University of Hawai‘i’s flagship campus, serving over 1,500 undergraduate majors and 150 graduate students for degrees in biology, botany, marine biology, microbiology, molecular cell biology, and zoology. Research interests of the 40 faculty members span all biological scales, with many focusing on ecology, evolution, and conservation biology.   The UHM campus is located in Honolulu on the island of O‘ahu, a unique location that provides access to a diversity of ecosystems in one of the world’s exceptional hotspots for biodiversity and endemism. Beyond biological diversity, Honolulu is home to a diversity of cultures and is recognized as a top place to live with the highest quality of life.   As a Land and Sea Grant institution and member of the Space Grant Consortium, UHM is the only Carnegie R1 university in the state. Current enrollment at UHM is 19,000 (14,000 undergraduate and 5,000 graduate). Students are drawn from all 50 states and around the world, with nearly one-third of students being members of underrepresented minority groups. Modern teaching and research laboratories are available, as well as access to multiple core-facilities including genomics and sequencing facilities and a cutting-edge microscopy and visualization core-facility with state-of-the-art instruments.   The School welcomes applicants whose research addresses fundamental questions in the life sciences using integrative approaches and methods, including any system, ranging from cell and molecular biology to organismal and system-level studies, both empirical and theoretical in nature. The Director of SoLS is expected to be an established leader in their field, with an active research program and a demonstrated track-record of leadership in an academic setting, including their role as an effective advocate for resources at the university, state and national level. The Director oversees approximately 28 faculty, whose responsibilities in the School of Life Sciences include teaching and developing undergraduate and graduate courses, supervision of student research, undergraduate advising, service to the university and professional community, and externally-funded research programs. The successful applicant will provide a vision for aligning the School’s research and instructional activities with local and national priorities. The Director will also have the opportunity to strengthen existing research areas, develop new innovative initiatives in the School, and foster collaborations across the University of Hawai‘i system.   The Director also has the responsibility of ensuring that the School’s mission of promoting learning and discovery through scientific research is aligned with the strategic plans of UHM and The University of Hawai (Download PDF reader)‘i System (Download PDF reader) as a Native Hawaiian Place of Learning. Diversity, equity, inclusion, and efforts to broaden participation are an important part of the academic culture and university mission. The School emphasizes interdisciplinary collaborations in place-based and experiential teaching, research, and service to the State of Hawai‘i. SoLS houses a diverse academic community that highlights undergraduate research and service activities, and has created affiliations with several cross-disciplinary units across the University. The School of Life Sciences at UHM plays a unique and integral role in research, teaching, and training, especially with particular connections to Native Hawaiian and Pacific Island cultures and with respect to indigenous knowledge.     UHM adheres to fair and inclusive recruitment and hiring procedures, and is a campus committed to diversity, equity, and inclusion excellence.
