Exempt, non-civil service, full-time, temporary appointment. The purpose of the OHE is to advance health equity by: 1) assessing and monitoring population health and identifying health disparities; 2) engaging stakeholders to develop policies, systems, and environmental change improvements to eliminate health inequities; 3) evaluating and monitoring efforts; and 4) reassessing strategies with the continuous engagement of key stakeholders. The PREP OHE Epidemiologist Supervisor will 1) provide Departmental leadership on epidemiological resources, strategic direction, and capacity development to advance understanding of population-based health disparities; 2) oversee a data team that is responsible for improving the collection of health equity surveillance data, conducting epidemiological studies; and implementing evaluations; 3) provide highly technical guidance to meet the surveillance, evaluation, and reporting requirements of the “National Initiative to Address COVID-19 Health Disparities Among Populations at High-Risk and Underserved, Including Racial and Ethnic Minority Populations and Rural Communities” grant.


Minimum Qualification(s)

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE: Doctoral-level epidemiologist and at least two (2) years of professional level work experience as a scientist-level epidemiologist; or

Master’s Degree in Epidemiology or a health-related field for which the candidate completed and passed at least three (3) epidemiological methods courses, one of which must be an advanced level, and at least two (2) biostatistics courses requiring mastery of large datasets and analyses using a statistical software set [each qualifying course should have fulfilled a minimum of two (2) credit hours] and four (4) or more years of professional work experience in epidemiology in a public health agency; or

Other advanced non-epidemiology professional degree or certification in a biomedical field (e.g., MD/DO, DDS/DMD, DVM, or PhD in Biochemistry, Biostatistics, Cancer Biology, Cellular/Developmental Biology, Environmental Health Sciences, Epidemiology, Genetics, Health Education, Health Policy/Economics, Health Services and Policy Analysis, Infectious Disease, Molecular Biology, Medical Ethics, Microbiology, Neuroscience, Nutrition, Pharmacology, or Physiology) with specific epidemiology training (e.g., MPH Degree, CDC Epidemic Intelligence Service Program) and at least two (2) years of professional work experience as a journey level Epidemiologist; or

Other advanced non-epidemiology professional degree or certification in a biomedical field and graduate level coursework in epidemiology and four (4) years of professional level work experience as an Epidemiologist.

SUPERVISORY APTITUDE: Must demonstrate the aptitude or potential for the performance of supervisory duties through the successful completion of regular or special assignments that involves some supervisory responsibilities or aspects of supervision, e.g., by serving as a group or team leader, or completing training courses in supervision accompanied by the application of supervisory skills in work assignments; and/or by favorable appraisals by a supervisor indicating the possession of supervisory potential.

LICENSE: Valid State of Hawaii Type III driver’s license preferred.
