Job Title: IP Part-Time ESL InstructorThe International Programs Department (IP) of Hawaii Tokai International College invites qualified ESL instructors to apply for its teacher pool in 2022 - 2023. Successful candidates will be considered for temporary, casual positions for our short-term customized programs on an as needed basis. IP hosts program groups of different age groups throughout the year. Appointments vary in length (a few days - 8 weeks) with teaching schedules ranging from 90 minutes to 3 hours per day. Classes are usually in either the morning or afternoon. The most teachers are needed during the months of January through March and July through November.Essential Functions:Design and conduct activities and lessons based on ESL teaching methodologies. Classes and curriculum vary from program to program, including but not limited to classes in areas such as conversation, speech, American culture, Hawaiian culture, reading and writing, or classes in English for specific purposes, such as medicine, nursing, business, etc.Create an environment for active learning and task-based learning. Adhere to requirements of incorporating specific objectives and course outcomes for all classes taught in keeping with institutional outcomes and mission. Foster a learning community in which respect for multilingualism and multiculturalism.Work in partnership with other facilitators in the program. Minimum Qualifications:Bachelor’s degree in Applied Linguistics, Education, or related field. Previous teaching experience. Strong ability to communicate orally and in writing in English.Knowledge of teaching/learning psychology and methods.Well-rounded knowledge of American culture. Self-motivated and have a strong desire to pursue and disseminate knowledge.Desired Qualifications:Master’s degree or equivalent experience in Applied Linguistics, Education or related field.Successful experience teaching international students of various age groups and backgrounds for customized programs in-person or online.Overseas/cross-cultural experienceFamiliarity with current trends in TESOL methods and materials.
