What We Offer
- Ensure implementation and sustainability of company (Corporate/BU/BL/Regional) EHSS policies and procedures to ensure compliance with company expectations as well as relevant local, state, and federal regulations (e.g., OSHA, EPA, DOT, ADEM, DEA).
- Develop and oversee necessary employee training programs [DOT/IATA (HazMat) regulations, etc.] to ensure compliance with sound EHSS practices and policies and environmental permit requirements. Ensure that training is conducted for all employees according to the frequency identified in the regulations.
- Serve as the site point-of-contact to Corporate and regional groups for EHSS practices and policies.
- Provide oversight and administration of waste handling functions including, but not limited to, lab and facility inspections, support of waste handling and disposal practices and procedures, preparation of hazardous waste manifests and other regulatory documents.
- Maintain thorough and complete documentation and records for all aspects of the EHSS responsibilities including, but not limited to, employee training, permits, inspections, hazardous waste disposal, accident/incident reporting, DEA accountability, and any medical, respiratory, and vaccination exams.
- Be current in any necessary training that may be required to support and participate in OSHA, EPA, DOT, first aid/CPR, and DEA activities.
- Establish, implement, and manage necessary environmental, health and safety programs such as the Pharmaceutical Evaluation and Safe Handling Program, Personal Protective Equipment Program, Respiratory Protection Plan, medical surveillance, industrial hygiene monitoring, and vaccination programs to comply with relevant (OSHA/EPA) regulations and company requirements. Serve as the EHSS-related Program Administrator as required by any regulation.
- Train staff and perform site-wide inspections and internal audits; report results to management, and recommend and oversee the implementation of corrective measures, as needed.
- Be the site point-of-contact for local, state, and federal representatives concerning EHSS issues and inspections.
- Submit local, state, and federal required reports (OSHA, EPA, DOT, ADEM, for example).
- Submit company EHSS metrics as required by Corporate and regional policy (e.g., annual SuRe reporting, quarterly regional submittals).
- Develop and implement the necessary site governance structure for EHSS matters (for example, safety committee, EHSSLT team, QRA coordinators, Safety at Evonik Multipliers, etc.).
- Routinely update management on EHSS performance, gap analyses, and overall status of the safety program
- Manage the site security process and act as the site security manager as well as manage the emergency response and planning process.
- Lead the Safety at Evonik process and the Site EHSS process to incorporate EHSS behaviors in all functions.
- Manage the Responsible Care program (RC14001).
- A Bachelor of Science degree in a relevant technical field (chemistry, biology, microbiology, chemical engineering, industrial hygiene, etc.) with a minimum 5-7 years of experience in a role responsible for safety. Supervisory experience preferred.
- Industrial experience in EHSS function in an industrial environment preferably in research or pharmaceuticals.
- Must be capable of reviewing, evaluating, and setting EHSS policy.
- Thorough knowledge of relevant OSHA policies related to chemical processing or research (laboratory) environments including, but not limited to HAZWOPER, HazComm, Chemical Hygiene, PPE, blood-borne pathogen, etc.
- Familiarity with state/federal EPA and DOT regulations affecting facility permitting and reporting, hazardous waste shipments, hazardous waste disposal
- Must be able to pass a DEA background check (as described by 21CFR1301.93)
- Preferred: Hazardous Materials Technician certification (spill control)
- Excellent communication skills (both written and verbal)
- Excellent interpersonal and team-building skills; demonstrated ability to develop relationships across departments
- Excellent organization and documentation skills
- Experience conducting employee safety training sessions
- Physically able to sit/stand for extended periods of time, bend/stoop, walk, lifting of up to 40 lbs.
- Demonstrate experience in Industrial Hygiene sampling and principles
- Demonstrated ability to motivate others
- Demonstrated ability to lead cross-functional teams in problem-solving
- Prior experience leading a team in a manufacturing or laboratory environment
- Ability to manage the business by analyzing data, developing countermeasures, implementing action plans and monitoring results
- Ability to communicate clearly to people at all levels of the organization
- Ability to coach employees to improve their performance with respect to EHSS practices
- Ability to prioritize activities to allocate human resources and dollars
