Police Aide
Description
Under direct supervision, performs routine, non-hazardous work in one or more assigned areas of the police department. This is a temporary/part-time position working approximately 20 hours per week. The hours and areas of assignment may be subject to change depending upon the operational needs of the department. Typical assignments are 4–6 hour shifts; mornings, afternoons, or early evenings. May be required to work holidays and weekends.
Example of Duties
Essential job duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:
Furnish general information and assist the public in person at the front counter and over the telephone.
Perform computer data entries and general records duties.
Take minor police reports.
Perform traffic control direction at public gathering places and traffic collision scenes.
Issue parking violations and bicycle citations.
Mark vehicles with warning tags for various traffic violations.
Make residential vacation checks.
Perform messenger duties for various divisions of the police department.
May accompany experienced officers on routine patrol.
Search files and obtain automated records management system data pertaining to traffic accidents, citations issued and cost recovery reports.
Assist in the booking of prisoners.
Provide public fingerprinting service.
Provide or arrange for routine service to police vehicles and radio equipment and conduct inventory of supplies in police vehicles.
Perform other related, non-sworn duties as assigned.
Typical Qualifications
Knowledge of: Methods and techniques for resolving conflicts and interacting with the public; various Windows-based software.
Ability to: Learn and correctly interpret and apply laws pertinent to vehicle codes and local ordinances; learn standard broadcasting procedures of a police radio system; read and interpret maps; input data into a computerized records management system; efficiently operate office equipment; follow written and oral instructions; safely operate a motor vehicle; work various shifts, holidays and/or weekends; establish and maintain an effective work relationship with those contacted in the performance of required duties.
Experience, Education and Training: Equivalent to six months full-time experience involving extensive public contact and a high school diploma or G.E.D.
Other Requirements: An incumbent in this classification is required to drive a City authorized vehicle in the performance of required field duties. A valid California driver license is required accompanied by proof of an acceptable driving record. An acceptable driving record must be maintained during the course of employment.

Employment Disqualification Standards
CRIMINAL
Any felony conviction except as provided in Government Code 1029(b)-(e).
ILLEGAL USE OR POSSESSION OF DRUGS
Any adult use or possession of a drug classified as an illegal opiate, hallucinogen, stimulant or depressant in the past 7 years. This includes cocaine, methamphetamine, heroin, GHB, ecstasy, etc.
FINANCIAL
A pattern, history, or irresponsibility as evidenced by debt collections, civil judgments, or failure to pay, etc. Exigent circumstances may be evaluated on an individual basis.
MOTOR VEHICLE OPERATIONS
Any conviction of driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs within the past seven years of the date of application or more than one conviction of driving under the influence at any time.
ALL POLICE DEPARTMENT APPLICANTS WILL UNDERGO A THOROUGH BACKGROUND INVESTIGATION TO ENSURE CANDIDATES ARE OF GOOD MORAL CHARACTER (GOV'T CODE SECTION 1031). ALL BACKGROUND INVESTIGATIONS WILL BE SUPPLEMENTED BY A POLYGRAPH EXAMINATION
