SUMMARY OF DUTIES



The internship for project delivery is an exciting opportunity to gain knowledge of practices in construction and project management supporting Amtrak’s Northeast Corridor and engineering team.  The intern will work collaboratively with Amtrak staff in the fields of engineering specifically project delivery and gain knowledge of the operation including but not limited to production and division maintenance.  The intern will have an opportunity to learn broadly about Amtrak's business practices while being charged with focused support to project reporting, field information gathering, administrative support, and engineering technical support with guidance and support from Amtrak senior staff.  



 



As part of the responsibilities to support Amtrak’s annual operating plan investments and support capital maintenance needs, the internship will focus on gaining railroad engineering knowledge to support project and construction management on America’s busiest passenger rail corridor as well as learn overall railroad knowledge within operations.   



 



The intern will make new contacts in the transportation industry and acquire skills and knowledge in initiating, planning, execution, monitoring and controlling, and close out procedures.  The intern will also coordinate in-house construction efforts within Amtrak-owned and/or maintained right-of-way, including track, bridges, buildings, signals and communications and electric traction facilities. 



 



ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS




  • Maintains a teamwork environment within all peers as well as the engineering department’s internal customers.

  • Analyze challenges, problems, and process breakdowns to ensure that lessons learned are used to improve project management, construction management, and project delivery practices.



 



MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS




  • Must be actively pursuing a degree at an accredited educational institution.  

  • Must be actively pursuing an undergraduate/graduate degree in Civil Engineering or Construction Management.

  • Must have at least 1 year of academic undergraduate studies completed or a sophomore status at minimum.  

  • Must have a cumulative GPA of 2.8 or higher. 



 



PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS




  • Willingness to learn and be in the field with an enthusiastic attitude.

  • Willingness and ability to work outside of normal work hours including nights and weekends.



 



COMMUNICATIONS AND INTERPERSONAL SKILLS:



Must have excellent written and oral communication skills.


 



The hourly range is $17.50 per hour - $35.00 per hour. Pay is based on factors including school year,  program of study, etc.  In addition paid internships include Amtrak rail pass privileges as a part of the experience along with one (1) PTO day per academic year.
