Paraprofessional

REPORTS TO: Administration and Department Head of Special Education

PAY: $13 per hour with full individual medical benefits paid

HOURS: Full time position (7:40am – 3:40pm)

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Creates a positive learning environment, which promotes appropriate behavior and successful learning. Students need to be engaged, challenged, and safe.
  • Promotes high expectations and demonstrate a caring attitude.
  • Assists in presentation of learning materials and instructional exercises in compliance with the student’s IEP.
  • Provide necessary assistance to the general education teacher as necessary, including developing a variety of instructional materials.
  • To provide assistance and instruction to individual students, with and without special needs, using instructional objectives and lessons designed by the teachers. (Please note first priority is to those students with special needs).
  • Assist the teacher by observing, recording, and charting data on specific behaviors for any student as requested.
  • Facilitate peer friendships and interactions.
  • Serve as a resource person to the team (e.g., assisting in implementation of educational objectives, providing feedback and suggestions to meet students’ educational needs).
  • Reinforce student and class goals by providing instruction individually or in groups to all students.
  • Address concerns, issues, or changes that affect the students, class, or teacher and provide support as necessary.
  • Carry out health and safety protocols.
  • Maintain confidentiality.
  • Refer all parent concerns to supervisor.
  • Maintain positive relationships with all students, school staff, and parents.
  • Support and implement discipline philosophy of the building.
  • Supervise non-instruction times (ie, recess, lunch, bussing) as needed.
  • Assists in maintaining a neat, orderly, and attractive learning environment.
  • Correct classroom papers/work.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Desired Minimum Qualifications:

  • Completion of at least two years of study at an accredited institution of higher education; obtain an associate or higher degree or meet a rigorous standard of quality; can demonstrate through a formal state or local academic assessment the knowledge of and ability to assist in the instruction of reading, writing, and math; one year paid or volunteer experience working with children in educational or child-care setting highly desirable, preferably involving children with special needs.
  • Training/certification in student restraint (ie.. CIP or MANDT).
  • Knowledge of general concepts of child growth, development, and behavior characteristics in special education programs.

Work Environment:

While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly works inside, but some duties will be performed outside, including recess, field trips, etc. The employee must be able to meet deadlines with severe time constraints. The employee will occasionally work irregular or extended hours while performing the duties of this job. The employee is directly responsible for the safety, well-being and work output of students.

The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.

Physical Demands:

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to sit, walk and stand; twist at the neck and waist; kneel. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus. The employee is required to be able to hear conversations in quiet environments. May be required to lift or move up to 20 lbs.

The employee may also be asked in helping students up off the floor, assisting with physical students who may kick, hit, bite, spit, recess duty and bathroom assistance.

Mental/Motor Demands:

The employee frequently exercises multi-tasking abilities. Guidance and reinforcement are infrequently available. The employee occasionally works within time constraints and maintains attentiveness intensity. The employee is frequently involved in social interactions which require oral and written communications.
